Chess Classes
Chess 101
This is a novice chess class and is designed to introduce all the basic elements of the game. We start at the very beginning with how to set up the board and pieces. Next, we progress to piece movement and how pieces capture. Then we will practice how to win the game. Lastly, we look at special piece movements and learn honorable chess etiquette.
Chess 201
This is a beginner chess class and is designed to introduce the common tactics used in game play. We start with understanding the value of different pieces. Then we work on understanding pins, forks, skewers, discoveries, and sacrifices. Lastly, we will look at how to defend against an attack.
Chess 202
This chess class completes our understanding of all the games basic fundamentals. We start with learning the written language of chess. Then we work on understanding openings and controlling space. Next we will focus on end game play. Lastly, we review tournament rules and types.
Chess 30X
This is an intermediate chess series that can be taken in any order after completing chess 101, 201, and 202. This series is designed for players that are solid with the basic fundamentals and wish to improve their game or are interested in getting involved in chess tournaments. There are a total of 6 classes in this series. We review different openings, tactics, and endgame scenarios. Here we will introduce the most common openings for white and the most common defenses for black. Additionally, we will work on tactics for the middle game and the most common end game situations. Students are required to join USCF’s Scholastic Program. Join/Renew
Chess 40X
This is an advanced chess class and is done one on one with a USCF Chess Expert or Master. It is designed for young players interested in becoming exceptional chess players. Here players will delve into chess theory and start pushing their abilities to the limit. These classes are scheduled by individual appointment only after a personal interview and skills assessment. Applicants should have a USCF rating of at least 1200.
